This commode is veneered with palissander from Rio and rosewood. It has a beautiful curve-shaped case, supported on four bracket feet. The piece is decorated with different veneer patterns to create ornament and movement, including butterfly wings. The sides of the case are inlaid with a central reverse diamond in kingwood in a panel surrounded by a rosewood fillet. The 45° “frisage” was very fashionable in the mid-18th century. The doors are cross-banded and decorated with fine drawer handles to look as though there are drawers instead of doors, in a way known as “trompe-l’œil”. It is varnished with French polishing and its interior is wax finished.
